How do you water?

by healthy ashley on April 29, 2009

Did you know? “Clean water is critical for sustaining life, yet polluted water and inadequate sanitation kills at least two children every minute worldwide.” - here

As we all try to be a bit kinder to the environment, the way we consume water stands out. Whether it’s the environment or their health, more people are working to avoid traditional plastic water bottles (more bloggers, anyway!).

“Only about 12 percent of “custom” plastic bottles, a category dominated by water, were recycled in 2003…that’s 40 million bottles a day that went into the trash or became litter.” -here

Worried about the health risks of plastic bottles and wanting to be more eco-friendly, I purchased my first Sigg bottle a few months ago. There are a lot of companies similar to Sigg, but I chose them because Sigg is safe, reusable and attractive. Love it.

That’s fine and dandy, but what about the water I drink at home- my main water source?

I don’t trust my tap water and can’t picture buying gallons of water from the grocery store each week, so I use a Brita pitcher.
I thought Brita would be the best bet with its reusable pitcher and new filter every month. I liked the idea of turning sink water to drinking water in just a few minutes time. But lately the water that comes from my Brita pitcher is gross. (It tastes like chlorine.. any ideas?!)

I’m hoping you have ideas or tips on the best ways to water. Maybe there is something I am just missing?

What do you use to get your water? Do you use plastic water bottles? Any specific products you recommend?

I love my Sigg! Green is the New Black! :)

It really upsets me when I see people using plastic water bottles. There is just NO need to!

I’m very lucky here in SF that the tap water is delicious. No, really! It’s good!

I’m lucky because I live somewhere that the tap water is very good, I think we’re even ranked in the top 5 of the country or something! I have a container like the Sigg only its made by a company called h2go…it was only $9 and I love it! I haven’t bought a bottle of water in months ;-)

Have you tried the filter that goes right on your faucet?

I’ve never been a fan of bottled water. Luckily, Oregon water is pretty good. Plus, we have updated plumbing in our house, so I’m not worried about old pipes contaminating our water. We do have a PUR filter on our faucet, but we rarely use it. Maybe I’m naive in thinking that straight from the tap is okay?
I’m a camelback girl myself – I don’t like how with Siggs you have to unscrew the top. I’m a busy girl – I don’t got the time! :)

I use a brita filter and an H2Go bottle. I think I save so much money by having a reuseable bottle.

hey! i use the water dispenser from my refrigerator. it’s similar to brita because you have to change the filter after a certain about of time.

i still have a nalgene..i really need to switch to a sigg.

We used to do the Brita filter thing but we had a big one and it took up too much precious fridge space (we buy a lot of groceries! haha) so now we do the big water cooler/jug thing. I use a steel water bottle but it’s just a plain non-pretty thing. I don’t think I’ve seen Siggs around here! I sure wouldn’t mind totting one of those around though, it would make drinking water even more fun! Haha

I believe that by switching to stainless steel containers or stainless steel water bottle we can reduce plastic waste. And can able to have or build a green world. If we can only take a look about what benefits can be gain when we use steel containers we'll get to know and learn to become more practical. Because steel containers are reusable, convenient to use, earth-friendly and 100%BPA free.
