Hiking in Our Backyard: Pisgah National Forest

I’ve always lived near a city but I’ve been an outdoors girl at heart. I’ve been in Asheville for three weeks but with the hustle and bustle of the holidays, moving and meeting new family, yesterday was the first time we could escape 20 minutes from home to Pisgah National Forest.

Richard was my hot tour guide, taking us around the Blue Ridge Parkway and pointing out the views.

See Richard in the photo above? There were huge icicles hanging up a hill on the side of the road. I joked that I wanted one so Mr. Hot Stuff climbed up and fetched me one! :)

We came across a little trail off the winding road. We began our hike, having no idea where we were headed…

The reward at the end was worth the 30-minute hike and more!

This waterfall was partially frozen at the bottom. The water went into this huge pile of ice and into the stream underneath. We took advantage of the iced area and explored!

We climbed the ice to look below… it was COLD!

After our long hike we stopped by Looking Glass Falls.

Most of this area is normally filled with streaming water. Luckily it was iced over so we were able to get super close to the waterfall’s base.

Below you see where a section of ice broke away and the cold water is underneath. On second thought, walking over the ice might have been a bit risky. :-P

I love the picture of you behind the waterfall! I haven’t been to this waterfall yet. My spouse just got a job in Asheville so we will be relocating to the Asheville area within the next month! Yay! I will have to do this hike. Have you been to the Smoky Mountains National Park yet? We went a couple of weeks ago and it was great! Lots of great hikes.

I bet since you did this hike in January that you had the waterfall all to yourself!

It’s a beautiful area. My wife and I (and our kids) have hiked these mountains for 37 years and there’s always something new to see. Even when you go back to a familiar place, a change of season can give you a whole new perspective. Nice post; love the photos.
