In an ideal world we’d get everything we need from the foods we eat and we’d be vibrant, energetic, perfect humans.
But I don’t live in an ideal world.
So I take B-6, folic acid and 5-HTP to balance my crazy hormones.
I take magnesium when I’m getting headaches.
I drink Spark when I’m feeling slumpy.
Sometimes my diet is less than perfect and I’m more than happy to take some natural supplements to keep me functioning at my best!

When Nicole from M80 asked me if I’d like to review Sun Chlorella, calling it Nature’s Perfect Superfood, I said yes!

Richard and I read all the informational materials about this product, laughing that we didn’t know exactly what it was for. In addition to nutrients, amino acids and more, the website says this:
Sun Chlorella has the powerful ability to help detoxify your body and eliminate chemicals present in our daily lives. Taking Sun Chlorella regularly can help counteract additives present in today’s food supply. Adding one serving of Sun Chlorella with each meal can help absorb pesticides in the food you’re consuming, so that it may not even get a chance to be absorbed into your body.
Chemicals found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe bind to the chlorella, and are then excreted through our stool, urine, and sweat. One serving of Sun Chlorella is equivalent to one serving of fresh green vegetables (without the pesticides)!

Normally I’ll mix in samples in my regular daily diet here and there, but Sun Chlorella has me intrigued. Nicole sent me a 20-day supply, so I’m going to take one packet each day for 20 days and see if I notice any benefit.

I kicked off this 20-day challenge with a glass with breakfast. It tasted like Amazing Grass… but grassier. I may have had a spoonful of cookie dough to wash it down

Depending on what they are, I’m all for supplements! I think it’s a lot better than taking a bunch of medications if you can find a more natural source of “healing” in vitamins that will work.
I just voted but thought I’d note that while I absolutely love my supplements (currently taking a multi, omega-3, vitamin D, MSM and glucosamine) that I think it is really important to thoroughly research anything before taking it. A lot of all-natural supplements can interfere with medications or aggravate already existing conditions. I’m lucky that my doctor is a DO (Doctor of Ostepathic Medicine) so she takes a more holistic approach, is pretty well-versed in natural alternatives and is always happy to provide any insight that she has!
I can’t wait to hear what you think of the Sun Chlorella!
I supplement with calcium and vitamin D, but I’m a little wary of the “all encompassing” supplements. I am sometimes a little fearful of their lack of regulation.
I’m really interested to read about your experience with the Sun Chlorella (which unfortunately makes me think of Cholera).
I mix mine in a green smoothie, then you don’t taste it!! EWW!!
Have a great day!
I take the basics-Multi, Vitamin D, Fish Oil. Since I eat a fairly balanced diet, I can never tell that the Multi helps with anything, but I can definitely tell when I don’t take the D and Fish Oil.
I’m definitely wary of supplements. Too often something has been touted as a “must take” because it will help A, B and C but then 3 months later is proven to be just like a placebo or worse, harmful.
I’m not the best at getting all my nutrients in my diet though so I do take a multivitamin with iron (anemia tendencies run in my family).
I don’t take any, but I think I may start taking a Vitamin B12 supplement since I’m a vegetarian.
I am always wary of supplements. I do take a multi-vitamin, but no supplements or powders.
The only supplement I consistently take is B12, but I dabble in taking calcium & magnesium supplements, DHA supplements, multi vitamins and vitamin C…but to be honest I go through phases with them as I am terribly forgetful when it comes to supplements!
I took spirulina for a while too.
I should probably take my supplements on a more consistent basis, but I have a sensitive stomach and found the multi-vits and calcium could be very hard to digest, even taken with a meal.
I take flaxseed usually every day for Omega 3.
I believe in getting it from whole food sources Bt will take like vitamin d in the winter since I’m not in the sun. I do have c b etc around for when I don’t eat the best or have system overload running my business and chasing my babies around.
I do not consider chorella a supplement though, score for you! its an amazing superfood! I take it in my smoothies. You prob already know but it helps detox the body of heavy metals. I’m excited to c how u feel!
I gotta say, if it tastes anything like AG, I won’t be trying it.
I just can’t get past the taste, no matter what I mix it with.
I’m okay with supplements in general, but I don’t take them. Partially because I don’t know what to take and partially because I never remember
While I totally support other people taking supplements (as long as they are responsible, which I know you are), I try really hard to get everything I need from my diet. So far I have been able to, but if I need to add something or find out I’m deficient, I won’t hesitate to do what I need!
I often put chocolate Amazing Grass in my smoothies, and love that stuff, but mostly I don’t mess with supplements. It will be interesting to see if you notice any changes during your twenty day challenge.
yo dawg – the only thing I absorbed from this post [speed reading at work] was your gorgy nail polish. I don’t want to start reading about how great grassy things are and then I can’t get them in England. I will cry for hours, again.
but seriously I looooove your manicure. xoxoxo and you. <3
Strongly suggest that everyone supplements their diet.
Why supplement?
1 We do not eat enough veggies/fruits both quantity and variety to get all the minerals and vitamins our body need.
2 The pollution that we have done to our soil/environment has stripped our food supply from its original nutritional value, and we all ingest toxins.
3 Our systems are clogged and we are not cleansing properly, which leads to poor nutrition adsorption, indigestion, and digestive health complications.
4 Our bodies will not let go of “emergency energy” – fat unless we are giving it everything it needs.
Be careful with what supplements you choose, they are not all created equal. There are no FDA regulations on any supplements in the US so know where your supplements come from. The teenager at GNC is probably not the best person to ask. I trust AdvoCare 100%, they spend millions of dollars each year to have each of their products tested for ingredients by a third party company, called informed choice, to make sure everything that is on the label in the product and that there are no banned substances in them so elite athletes and Olympians can take them too. What’s cool about that is, hundreds of professional athletes are using AdvoCare, they trust AdvoCare with their career, the ability to perform well, I’m pretty sure I can trust my health with them too. : )
But definitely do your own research. There are good companies out there you just have to find them. A good indicator of qulity is to ask yourself, do they actually make a measurable difference in my life? If the answer is no, they are probably not worth your investment.
I had to stop taking most supplements due to my participation in some medical research. But I did get approval to take magnesium (which helps me with muscle cramping) and also a general green powder (looks like yours, but I take Green Vibrance). I find it helps my energy levels.
I think the first step is to look at what you eat, to figure out what you need to supplement. I did this with a nutritionist and it helped me a lot, to also build a more balanced diet. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of the Sun Chlorella!
Thanks for posting your review, Ashley!
I’ve been looking into chlorella for a while. I’ve read numerous things about its benefits in terms of vitamins, minerals and it’s detoxing effects. I was curious if people were more a fan of chlorella in pill or powder form.. I think I’ll give this brand a try.
I am a vegan and a runner, so I consider supplements to be very important. I have to make sure (according to my doctor) to be supplementing iron, B12, Vitamin C and calcium. I try to have 1-2 scoops of Vega Whole Food Optimizer a day to get it all in (in addition to all the amazingly nutritious things I eat as a vegan!) and at my last check up, my blood work was great, except for a little iron deficiency. Overall, supplements have worked well for me!
Occasionally, I take supplements but I usually research the ingredients or my symptoms before doing so and try to find an alternate remedy. Quick fixes usually aren’t long term.
