Being thousands of miles away from home for six days reminds me that there is really no place like home. I missed Richard, my puppies, my kitties (even Emma!), our house and Rosetta’s pad thai. Traveling as engaged Ashley is certainly different than traveling as single Ashley. Now I have a little family that needs me like I need them. Being away was hard but in hindsight it was a nice reminder of how happy I am at home.

I’ve been in San Francisco for Green Festival. I’ve been in an office helping promote the event and this past weekend I watched it come to fruition. It was a lot of work, but the event was fantastic. It was inspiring to see thousands of people gather for one common cause: to create a more sustainable and socially, environmentally and economically responsible world.

I caught bits of various speaker’s presentations and I appreciated how down to earth and willing to share their message they were. I talked with several green exhibitors who were thrilled to talk about what their business is doing for the environment. I snagged a fair trade scarf and several necklaces made in South America and Guatemala. All the items are gorgeous and it’s good to know they support women in less developed parts of the world.
Zoe Weil and Amy Goodman!

We stayed in downtown San Francisco (on 8th and Market for anyone in the area). Apparently this is one of the worst parts of San Francisco so I’m not letting this trip be my final judgment on the city as a whole
We were busy with looooong days working, but everything I saw looked fabulous. Richard and I hope to explore the city and surrounding areas soon! I did get to Trader Joe’s and some cool food stores so that was entertaining enough

Travel is tough on a body! Between two 14 hour travel days and several long days of hard work, I’ve slightly lost touch with my body. I worked on getting as much rest as possible, but my only exercise was working and a little walking. For food I basically ate all processed carbs. And a lot of them. They travel well and were readily available. At least I scored some yummy eats at Green Festival, like this vegan falafel wrap with tahini!

A highlight was certainly meeting some awesome local bloggers! I was able to meet Courtney, Cate and Gavi (and all of their wonderful significant others). San Francisco has some great bloggers!

Gavi was incredible and brought me these treats from a local bakery. They were freakin’ awesome! Thank you Gavi!!

Before I board my last flight home, I leave you with one of many photos Richard sent me to keep me connected to home
Awesome.

Do you miss home when you travel alone? What is your best travel tip?

oh what a fun trip and I totally know what you mean about missing home and your loved ones!
do you really have 4 pups??
YES! And two cats
It was SO great to have met you and I already can’t wait for you and Richard to come back to San Francisco!
I totally agree with you–travel can be so hard on the body (even when you’re traveling for fun!). I always like to pack lots of fruit with me on my trip so I know I always have a portable, handy snack when I get hungry. Like you, I also like to walk everywhere I can. It’s exercise and sight-seeing rolled into one! I hope you can rest up and enjoy your time at home with your lovely family!
I love the puppy pics! I was just gone for 8 days and my fiancĂ©e was sending me videos and pictures of our dog the whole time. They certainly help when you’re away! Although I feel like Reddick grew a TON while I was gone!
Hah, I wouldn’t say that 8th and Mission is the WORST my city has to offer, but certainly not the best. It is super close to lots of awesome stuff, though. That’s the funny thing about cities sometimes — all you have to do is a walk a block and suddenly it’s a whole new neighborhood and a very different vibe.
Hehe
I bet the pups and the fiance will be happy to see you! That festival looks like it’d be right up my ally
It’s great that you promote green living through your company
I miss my animals a lot when I’m away from home. I try to take Trixie with me as much as I can, and Jason too (of course)
Gluten free cupcakes!!! Yum!
WOO! I absolutely LOVED meeting you. You’re just a gem!
I hope you and Richard come to San Fran soon – I really think you’d enjoy yourselves (and the Bay Area in general!). So happy you’re back home with your family.
Looks like a great (yet exhausting) trip. I stayed up on Nob Hill when I traveled to San Fran and remember how beautiful it was there. But I got up one morning and went for a jog and I guess I wasn’t paying much attention and I ended up in one of the shadiest areas I’ve ever been. It was mere blocks from this fabulous 5 star hotel. I guess every city is like that. Next time I travel I’ll be more aware of my surroundings before going out by myself.
And, by the way, your dogs eyes kinda freak me out in that picture.
I miss my pup when I travel!
My favorite travel tips are:
1. Wear flip flops on the plane.
2. Backpack=best carry on.
3. Bring snacks.
4. Don’t stress.
5. TAKE PICTURES.
I don’t have to travel alone that often, but when I do I miss home like crazy! Ever since I have become more conscious about my eating, I pack snacks and that is such a huge savior!
It was awesome to meet you…wish we could have hung out a little more!
I live on 7th and Market! This area is…. yeaaaaaahhhh lol. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the city!!
I love traveling, but get homesick too
hahah i love the pic of all the pups! They look like alien doggies with those eyes!! I have 3 dogs and i just love coming home to them and my fiance if i happen to travel without him
That gecko is so cute! If lizards can be cute….
I love the pic of the dogs, laser eyes!
I love traveling alone – it’s like my own adventure. I like to try new restaurants and find “out of the way” non-touristy things to do at night (when I travel for business) to make it fun and different! I also always love to find the local hot yoga studio – I found a great one that way when I was in Seattle and it’s a great way to meet new people too! Glad you trip went well!
Excuse me please, but do you know you had a LIZARD-thing in your hand!?!? gagagagaaa. That would freak me out. And ya, as you family grows, so does your heart to be back home with them when you have to go away – even for a day. Family = Love.
