Yesterday was my 23rd birthday! Normally I’d celebrate my birthday with a long run or bike ride, a yoga class and probably running around town visiting all my favorite places. This birthday was different for sure, but it ended up being one of my best birthdays.
I spent the day resting, showering (that’s a big feat with a broken pelvis!) and doing my physical therapy exercises until Richard came home from work.

Richard and I have been close for years, but this was my first birthday with our love out in the open
Richard’s beautiful card brought tears to my eyes and he hit a home run with the gifts. Notice he took a risk by giving me a new bike helmet.

Richard also pimped out my walker. Please notice the streamers in the back and the “Today’s My Birthday!” badge on the front. Because hopping along with a walker isn’t embarrassing enough.

We made the drive downtown for dinner and dessert. Venturing outside the house is tough. Richard has the job of dropping me off up front, parking the car and then doing it all over again when we leave. I can’t put any weight on my right side so using the walker is a slow, tiring task. Needless to say, my arms will be jacked by the time I can walk again.

We visited the local Mellow Mushroom for pizza!

Hot. Husband.

We shared a medium Mega Veggie with vegan cheese. It was unbelievably good!

After fully stuffing ourselves with pizza we headed to the other side of town for cupcakes and a brownie from Firestorm Cafe. I even got a few birthday wishes when people saw my fancy walker

Apologies for the low quality iPhone photos. Using a walker means carrying my usual bag just isn’t an option.

I felt so very loved on this birthday and for that it was one of the best. I have a wonderful husband and so many friends (near and far, old and new!) who love me. Sure, I couldn’t walk, but there’s plenty of time for that in the next year.
How do you celebrate your birthday? Who else has a September birthday?

You two are ever so cute!!!
And can I just say that if anyone can get through this, you can!!!! Not only do you have a brilliant attitude but you have a huge team in the blogosphere pulling for you!
Ashley, Happy Birthday! I had no idea you were turning 23. You are so much wiser and have accomplished much more in your 23 years than I have in my 24 years and I am so confident that this will only be a minor set-back for you. I could only dream of doing the things you have already done. No matter what, I will continue to look up to you and aspire to be even half the person you are. Stay strong!
Happy happy happy birthday! I love that you approached the day with such an upbeat, positive attitude – as always.
The most important thing is being surrounded by love and you certainly were! It looks like a great day. Also, Richard’s sweater – TOO cute. I wish I could get my husband to wear a sweater like that. Not in this lifetime! (Oh, and you looked lovely too. Obvi.)

I hope you did have a happy birthday – if anyone deserves one it’s you.
And can I say you managed to look absolutely lovely even with a walker! The way Richard decorated it was so sweet, and I hope the love of family and friends helped to go some way towards compensating for the lack of running. As you say, there’s always next year, and I admire your continued fighting spirit so much.
*hugs*

Hi Ashley,
My Birthday is tomorrow! I have been following your blog posts ever since Ashley Hart Bush started posting the link on Facebook. I am so sorry for your accident, but on the flip-side, it’s been nice “getting to know you” through your blog! You are a strong, person and I commend you for that! With your attitude, you will be back to 100% before you know it! I am glad you had such a great birthday, and what seems to be a really cool husband!
Best wishes,
Mark

Happy Birthday Ashley!!! Wow you are so young! you have your whole life ahead of you!
) I feel so old. I’m 31! But I did live my 20s to the fullest. Traveled the world, went to med school in the caribbean, did rotations in NY, living in Ca now and hopefully will be back in NY! Keep rockin!
Happy Belated Birthday! Your pimped out walker was hilarious.
I’ve been reading about your story from other blogs and I finally ventured over! I’m so glad that you’re recovering!

My birthday is the day after yours! I’m amazed at all the races you’ve done. I’m training for a half marathon relay in January and it’ll be my first race! I’m a bit nervous to say the least, but the entrance fee is my birthday gift to myself.
Hope you get back onto your feet soon!
