Holistic Healing

I’ve always preferred holistic methods of wellness over standard medical care. If I’m feeling ill I’ll grab a fresh green juice, sleep extra and take some herbs. If I have cramps I’ll make some hot tea and go for a walk. I used to avoid medicine and doctors visits at all costs.

That changed after my accident. I needed the medicine, the technology and the surgeons. My previous respect and dependence on standard medical care was wiped away; my life was in their hands.

My time in the hospital and on every pain reliever, blood thinner shots, anti-nausea meds, anti-dizziness meds and so on was necessary, but once I got home I was ready to add in some holistic love.

Last week Evan from Downtown Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture came to the house to do acupuncture on the right side of my body and all over my head. It was a relaxing treatment. He also left some homeopathic treatments and a mixture of 15 herbs that I take several times a day with warm water.

That day I told Evan that the pain was so bad that I had to wake up throughout the night to continue taking my pain pills.
The day after the acupuncture the severity of the pain went away. I quit the pain meds. My pelvis had some pain, but it was nowhere near the level before the acupuncture. Also, the combo of removing the pain meds and adding the holistic treatments cleared my head. I could now put together complete sentences in conversation!

A few days ago Jessica from White Sage Massage and Yoga visited the house for a Reiki session.

From Jessica’s website: Reiki (Rei: soul or spirit + ki : vital energy) is a form of energy work developed by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui in 1922. It is a series of gentle hand placements and is suitable for those who can’t receive circulatory massage. The best method of understanding Reiki, as it varies from each individual, is in a session.

Jessica explained it as a transfer of energy. The energy wasn’t from Jessica and she doesn’t set an intention for the session. The recipient can feel nothing at all or can feel pressure or tingly sensations. I’ve heard stories of Reiki unleashing hidden emotions and healing bones unbelievably fast.

I laid comfortably and we played soothing music. Jessica either placed her hands gently or hovering over specific parts of my body, beginning with my head and moving toward my feet. It was intense. I felt all sorts of pressure and light all over. Although she was hardly touching me at all, there was a lot going on.

The Reiki lasted maybe 40 minutes. Afterward I felt whole, clear minded and incredibly alert. I felt as if I had just woken from a perfect night of sleep. I was also more in tune with my emotions.

That evening we ran into the person who found me and I remembered everything from the accident very vivdly. Two days later my menstrual cycle began, which was weeks delayed from the trauma of the accident. Best of all, my pelvis feels so much stronger and I can evenly apply pressure to both feet and walk if I’m leaning on my walker. Let me tell you- that’s huge.

I meet with my surgeon October 6 for more tests and to evaluate where my progress is headed. I’m hoping he’s in a state of confusion looking at the X-rays and wondering how my bone has mended so fast.

When it comes to healing it’s tough to pinpoint that x is exactly what caused y. I can’t say for sure what is most responsible for the fast rate I’m healing, but I do know that everything plays some part. I credit the fact that I’m progressing so much faster than expected to positivity, love, prayers, acupuncture, herbs and Reiki. Most of my healing has been a group process. It takes a village to raise a child and it takes a village to heal a pelvis.

Do you practice alternative methods of healing? Have you tried Reiki?

That’s great, Ashley! I used to be skeptical of some of the alternative forms of medicine. Then, I didn’t have a period for 6 months and I didn’t want to take hormones, birth control, etc. So, I visited a chiropractor who knows a lot about holistic treatment and nutrition. I visited her two times and then a little over a week later I started my period. I have had a normal cycle since. I hope your recovery is going well.

I tried reiki for the cancer! I can’t tell if it worked though, seeing as I already know the chemo is blasting it. I think it might be better done for more acute symptoms like yours. Acupuncture helped me a lot with swelling when I started physio on my broken arm, but it didn’t help the pain. But I’m a huge wuss.

Have you looked into foot reflexology? Not sure how it would help your pelvis specifically, but it may soothe your surrounding body parts and help ease up all the stress in your body caused by the accident. So far it’s been my favourite “holistic” approach. Hell, a foot rub just feels nice :)

I found your blog via Meals & Miles (where I lurk but don’t comment). I just wanted to send speedy healing thoughts your way!!! I’m glad to hear the holistic treatments are helping you.

Have you heard about Janelle Morrison (http://www.janellemorrison.com/) before? She’s a pro triathlete from Calgary. She was in a pretty bad car crash last year and her rate of healing has been absolutely amazing. I thought you may find her story inspirational. All the best reaching your goals!!

My aunt practices reiki. I used to think it was nonsense, but the longer I live, the more I realize how little I know. I’d love to try it someday. I was so happy to read that the pain is subsiding, at least a little. I’m sending you lots of healing energy.

I used reiki on my shoulder about 4 years ago. I torn the long head of my biceps meeting my pectoral muscle and reiki along with strength training and ultrasound prevented me from having to have surgery (which was my main goal) it was long and slow but I was able to return to playing softball faster avoiding the surgery
