Things I love about today: a cool eight mile run ending at Lake Eola, a giant surprise carrot cake cupcake, iced coffee at my favorite coffee shop and swing dancing tonight.

Things I don’t love about today: my unhappy hip.
I took a 6am yoga class with my lululemon team Wednesday morning at Full Circle. It was a glorious way to wake up and it was fun to practice with so many awesome people.
The flow class included a lot of deep hip openers and balancing poses that put a lot of pressure on my hips. Normally I’d back off and modify the poses or skip the series and rest in child’s pose.
Our teacher mixed up the flow and kept us guessing in which pose was next. I focused too much on keeping up rather than checking in on how I was feeling. Plus, I was focused on looking good. I wanted to look like a great yogi who could keep up with the rest of my team so I pushed deeper than I should and stayed in poses even when my hip was crying.
Stupid.
The pain for the rest of the day was terrible. I took the rest of Wednesday off exercise. And Thursday. I’m amazed that it wasn’t running a marathon and doing CrossFit irritated my hip- it was a basic, early-morning yoga flow.
This morning I felt good so I set out for a long run. Almost halfway through I had to stop at an intersection and the pain in my hip flared up immediately. I hobbled my way down the block to Lake Eola and hung out with the swans until Richard could pick me up.
Lesson learned. Listen to your body.
Since it’s Friday, a funny video for anyone who loves or hates CrossFit, laughing or Reebok:
Do you find it harder to listen to your body when doing lower impact things like yoga?

I always try to push through the yoga poses. I think – if I just stretch a little further and BAM… pain later and sorrow.
And to answer your question, I went through Yoga Teacher Training last year and literally every day, every hour…it was drilled..DRILLED into our heads “Do not go past YOUR EDGE.” We all got so sick of hearing it, but it’s so true. We always see people pushing and pushing past edge in yoga. You want to look good or seem like you know what you’re doing…and so many people end up injured. Yoga isn’t a sport. It isn’t a competition, but within our society, it’s hard to treat any physical activity as anything otherwise.
People need to start treating yoga as yoga, and not a sport. It isn’t about how far you can go or how deep you can look in a posture. It’s about being there, breathing, and meeting yourself where you are in that moment. And being ok with that!

I listen to my body more in yoga, since I’m more tuned in. And I have great teachers so I can say “hey, this feels weird” and they’ll come help me modify so I can safely do the pose. Or, if I know the modification, I’ll do it myself. There are no gold stars or medals given out in my yoga classes for doing the “best” pose, and I want to keep my body healthy for a long long time.
Our bodies are strong but they are fragile. I know that one stupid move in yoga could wreck a knee or a shoulder. Same for you. You have a lot of years ahead of you that you want to use that hip. Don’t be foolish now and and in a wheelchair when you are 60.
A great yogi listens to her body, and a great team doesn’t care what each member is doing.
Here endeth the lecture. : )
Oh honey, you know I love ya, but please be careful! I know you recognize now that you did too much/ went too far, but you don’t want to re-injure yourself. You’ve come leaps and bounds, but it’s still a relatively recent injury. Take it from me – (long story short) my sister had multiple knee injuries as a college athlete, and she kept trying to come back and kept getting re-injured (and she had constant medical and physical therapy rehab attention/ is a PT student herself). Now she can’t play soccer anymore, is looking at potentially another surgery (I honestly don’t know what number this will be for her), and when she has kids, she probably won’t be able to kneel down by the tub to give them a bath without assistance. She’d be the first to tell you, it’s not worth it.
You know I love you, and you know I believe in you and think you have done AMAZING things, but I love you enough to want you to be careful. xo!

Oh, I’m so sorry about your hip! It’s just the problem with being athletic- you want to push yourself to prove you can do it, but sometimes it causes problems. Hope it feels better.
The rest of your day seems nice though! May you have a lovely weekend, and feel better.

I find it offensive that you make yoga sound like a joke. You take power yoga classes, and for many of us, that is a standard “workout” I practiee power yoga 4-5 times a week and I am strong and fit. I recognize when I need to back down to take a rest day. Because yes, you need to take a rest FROM yoga. Unless it is a restorative class it is not rest. Cross-training, yes. Rest, no. You need to get your ego in check and think about taking care of your self not keeping up with the others around you, and you need to think about how your comments could impact others.
This comment is a joke, right? And why are all the crazy commenters anonymous?

Judging by the content of the other comments, the rest are just here to plug their own blogs.
I don’t have a blog. If I did I would comment under my blog name. I’ll give you my first name, but that isn’t going to make me any less anonymous since Katie is a pretty common name. I’m not comfortable leaving my last name for my own safety reasons, not because I don’t want to be known. It was not a joke.
Caitlin is right. The comments that you get that say that you are amazing/your post is amazing have no substance and are just other small bloggers looking for clicks.
This is really an awesome post! I am glad you have shared it to us here…
