Vegan Paleo Something or Other

What a busy weekend. Regionals was on one coast Saturday and we visited family on the other coast Sunday. Our visit went late last night and we only got 2.5 hours of sleep before heading to CrossFit early this morning.

I managed enough energy for the WOD but I was exhausted and feeling off afterward. I decided to skip my run and yoga. At least I can still eat well!

Here and there I’ve been mentioning “vegan Paleo.” I know, I know. Vegan and Paleo are thought to be opposites- but in more ways then one they’re similar. Minus the huge meat factor, of course.

Paleo is all about eating close to the earth and eating lots of high nutrition foods in place of lower nutrition foods.

I ate close to this vegan Paleo idea I have leading up to the 50k and the 5k a few weeks ago and ended up feeling great and getting awesome PR’s. It clicked with my body- faster recovery time, stronger during workouts and I resisted getting sick when everyone around me was calling off work.

I’m reading “The Paleo Solution” and exploring what foods I need and why, so I’m waiting before I say too much.

Overall I’m eating lots of fresh greens, veggies and fruits, lots of protein, nuts, seeds, little beans and minimal grains or sugars.

-10lb.’s carrots :-)

-red peppers
-org ground beef (for Richard)
-baby spinach
-Spring mix
-dates
-bananas
-walnuts
-tomatoes
-avocados
-frozen berries
-almond butter
-almond flour (Amazon)

Today is my day 1 of a paleo challenge through my box. so far, so good. I’m doing it to see how it affects my performance with CrossFit, and to get myself off sugar. We eat pretty healthy in general, but sugar is our downfall.

So, what sources of protein are you eating without grains, etc?

Hey Love! I can’t wait to hear about your paleo/vegan adventure! I have a few friends that are “vegan” but have very low energy, get sick a lot and have a really hard time keeping weight off. They have reached out to me asking for advice. As you know I teach only paleo/zone…so I’m having a difficult time helping. Anyway I think your experience and advice will be very helpful to them and me! : )

Yay!! So far I have so much more energy. But eating like this takes more effort as a vegan- and more supplemental protein shakes! Promise to share everything I learn. Miss you!

I would love to hear more about ‘Vegan Paleo’ because I think it would be the ideal combination of concepts for me. Ironically, I am vegan but aspire to have the figures of people who follow a strict Paleo diet, and I agree with the Paleo philosophy (aside from the meat, like you). I’ve seen bits and pieces about combining the two on Go Kaleo but it would be great to hear your perspective on it – what’s your main protein source now that beans and tofu and seitan are obviously ‘out’ ?

I’m curious about protein too. You said “lots of protein” in the post but that wasn’t very specific as to what your main protein source is. I guess I’m just confused on how this works?

Hi Ashley,

On my ‘off days’ I try to remember that recovery and rest is an important part of any training programme!

I’d love to hear how you go on a vegan paleo diet. I pretty much follow paleo but do consume some dairy, but I’m slowly weaning myself off it.

Yes to vegan paleo. Want. to. try.

I love my days off. It means I get to lounge around in my pajamas and be thankful that my body can work as hard as it does on the other 5 or 6 days of the week.

Have you read Thrive by Brendan Frazier? He also has a new cookbook out. He is vegan and really focuses on foods that fuel your body in order to get your best performance. He’s such an inspiration!

Would love more detail on the vegan/paleo. I’ve been good with getting off of processed sugar but love me some fruit.

Your grocery haul looks like Costco to me. LOVE me some Costco too. I always get spinach, kale and spring mix, bananas and add on from there. I keep asking for more organic produce.
