Aches and Pains

YUM.

Last post I mentioned how amazing Ironman recovery was going… and forgot to knock on wood apparently because pain followed those words! So I have a 4.5 inch screw in my hip. As long as I’m active and stretch often, I generally have no pain. Even after the Ironman. What kills it is pressure and temp changes. The onset of the hurricane and immediate cold front in Florida equalled hell for my hip. For almost three days I had the most chronic, deep pain around my screw and massage, heat and pain meds didn’t help. I skipped sweating and slept a lot.

On Tuesday it was feeling better so I headed out for a run. (Note: if it was a hip injury I wouldn’t run on it, but the fact that it’s just pain from the weather let’s me push it more.) I set out for thirteen miles but managed ten before my right knee gave out. I was overcompensating for my hip and my knee was not happy. So my hip was mad at the weather and my knee was even more mad at my hip.

I have a long run tomorrow so I’ve been foam rolling and stretching it out. Here’s the best thing ever: icy hot + ace bandage + a heat pack wrapped around the sore area. Heaven on earth and I feel back to normal and ready to tackle tomorrow’s long run!

This morning I WODed and planned on skipping running but decided to see how it felt as I went.

WOD:

- 200m run w/ medicine ball

- 250m row

- 75 DU or 225 single-unders

8 ROUNDS FOR TIME

My knee held up great (no pain!) and I completed the endurance WOD. I used a 15lb medicine ball, averaged ~1:55/500m on the row and went grandma speed on my single-unders! I actually came in first, too (42:33)! I followed the workout with hot yoga. Just for good measure :)

Wish me luck on tomorrow’s long run! I just ate my favorite cookies to make sure I have enough energy :-)

What’s your favorite tip for nursing aches and pains?

You are a beast on the rowing! We used the indo-row today and I was pumped to get 430m in 2:00!!

I have screws in my spine so I totally know what you mean about the changing weather causing pain. Hopefully your run goes well tomorrow!

That’s a long WOD! I wish we did longer WODs at my box.
