Recipe: Creamy Matcha Smoothie

I had never heard of matcha until my first green tea frap. It was crisp, cool and just sweet enough. Unfortunately, it was also heavy on calories and an expensive habit to adopt.

Matcha is finely ground, high-quality green tea powder. It’s high in antioxidants and is said to boost metabolism and reduce cholesterol. It has an almost-bitter, earthy taste that just blossoms with a little sweetener. Find it at Whole Foods or your favorite Asian market.

Since a girl can only have so many fraps, I set out to making my own. I grabbed my go-to almond milk Silk PureAlmond Unsweetened Vanilla because it’s rich and creamy but only 30 calories. It is the perfect base for this creamy, sweet treat.

Now I can enjoy matcha at home and without the guilt. We love spiking it with protein powder, too!

This looks good. I’ll have to look for matcha powder. Is it expensive?

Not bad, but I’ve found it more expensive at Whole Foods. $7 and up for a small container, but keep in mind you only use a bit at a time. Worth it!

Might sound weird, but it’s REALLY good with melon flavors too! Like honeydew! I love matcha! My tea store sells matcha pumpkin seeds! So tasty!

Matcha is very popular in Japan – we saw it everywhere! Have yet to try it though. :)
