The Good Run

The past few weeks have been stressful with some health and personal things. I’ve missed a lot of workouts and was so happy to finally get out of the house Wednesday night for a beautiful run downtown. I stopped to take the above photo and to jot down my thoughts on what a good run is to me. Because it was a very, very good run.

I wish I could capture the good run in a photo or a word. A run where everything you’re mad about, confused about, sad about and worried about turns to fuel. You fly. You’re invincible. You run too fast. You run without a map. You run in new areas. You don’t worry that anything bad will happen; in the moment you have enough energy and power to go against anything. Your brain, your heart and your body unite. You can go forever. The burn only makes you go faster until you’re running with every ounce of passion and desire that the only thing from keeping you from flying is your shoes. It’s the good run.

And then I tripped and this happened.

Bloody shoulder, knee and hand. Ruined favorite crops. My good run turned the other direction fast, but the 7.4 miles of heaven still happened.

What is your good run? Do you feel invincible? What fuels you?

A good run to me is when I get through it with no pain or aches, when I surprise myself with speed and distance, going further than I planned and faster than usual. A good run is when I am flying towards my finish line with a smile on my face and feeling like I could keep going. I’m fueled by the electricity in the air, the beauty that surrounds me on the run and my positive voice (who rarely voices her opinion grr) shouting that this run belongs to me.

Ouch. Looking at the photo of your banged up knee makes me cringe. I have a horrible fear of falling or tripping anywhere at anytime. My pigeon feet don’t help either. I hope you heal fast so you can have another lovely injury free run. <3

the best runs always make me feel improved. Like that first mile you can feel the kinks in the day show up, then go away. When you can feel the first drops of sweat break through and roll down your face every other problem in the day just rolls away too.

wow, I really want to go run now.

Oh no! This is the story of my life! Whenever we are riding high I feel like the universe creates these moments to keep us humble. I know that amazing feeling and I’m so glad you experienced it and saw all the positive even after your tumble! Btw, I tried my first crossfit, difficult and exciting at the same time! I am intimidated by the strength of the people in the gym, but what inspiration at the same time. Props to you for your commitment girl!!

Ugh, sorry to see that you tripped and hurt yourself, but happy to see that you have perfectly captured the essence of “the good run” in words! That’s exactly how I feel when I find myself in the midst of a good run. It’s effortless and awesome and my thoughts suddenly just become clear. There’s nothing like a run that feels like that – nothing! =)
