About

Thanks for stopping by healthy ashley. I’m Ashley :) I live in Orlando, FL, with my CrossFit trainer husband and four big, black dogs. I’ve lived in Orlando for a while but spent a year in Asheville, NC, with Richard before bringing him back down to Orlando. I love it here.

I love staying active and favor endurance running events, triathlon, yoga and CrossFit. I completed my first Ironman distance triathlon October 2010 and have done four ultra marathons, dropped out of a 50-mile race, and several 26.2′s. My favorite marathon is Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN.

I’ve been a vegetarian since 2000 because eating meat didn’t make sense to me. We had  small farm and my chickens were pets; I had no interest in eating them. I followed a vegan diet for four years and, while I believe it’s possible to be a healthy endurance athlete as a vegan, I quit being vegan to honor my body’s cravings. Since leaving the vegan label I’ve settled into a Paleo-vegetarian-flexitarian diet and am loving it. Basically I eat eggs, fruit and veggies. Oh- and I love protein powder.

On September 9, 2011, I crashed my bike going downhill on a training ride. I broke my pelvis in three places, suffered a concussion and had lots of road rash. Here is the first post after the fall. Since the accident I’ve completed several marathons, including an ultra marathon, and hope my story inspires others to set big goals and go for them, because we’re stronger than we think and anything is possible.

My accident gave me a new sense of determination, taught me how to love and be loved and will always serve as a reminder to how lucky I am to move, sweat, run, lift and breathe. So I try to move, sweat, run, lift and breathe often.

Welcome!

The new site looks great!! I’ve been vegetarian for 8 years now and am raising both of my girls vegetarian as well. Living in a house with an omnivore (my husband) has it’s difficult moments, but we make it work! I’m slowly (but surely) moving myself and the girls to a gluten free/vegan diet this year. I’ve played around with it for long enough!!

Hi Ashley – Thanks for visiting my blog! I just eliminated dairy from my diet and have found that I really don’t miss it – and I’m interested to transitioning to vegan at some point. Very excited to follow along!

Ashley, I love your blog and the new look. I have to ask…what breed are your dogs?! They are gorgeous! I’m a dog-lover (without a dog at the moment). Can I ask how big they get and how much they weigh? They are just beautiful.

Love following your journey!

Thank you!

Dixie is boxer/black lab. ~68 pounds
Braxton is pit bull/black lab. ~75 pounds
Barley is… some kind of mutt :) ~50 pounds

Apparently big black dogs are the least likely to be adopted, but we love all three of ours!

Hey there! I just found your blog, and I am loving it! I am actually coming to Asheville in a few weekends and am currently training for a marathon. I have a 15 miler scheduled for that weekend… do you find that Asheville has good running trails/routes? I’d love to experience what it has to offer :)

Hi there Ashley,

I cannot tell you just how amazing and inspiring I found your story.
You’re truly an inspiration, and a perfect example of a strong, determined woman who won’t let anything get in the way of her goals and dreams!

I’ve suffered from running injuries before, but after reading this story, I feel like I definitely have no right to whinge about them!
You really show anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

I’m a passionate runner, and it’s really nice to connect with other bloggers who love it as much as me.

Keep blogging!
