The Fall- On September 9, 2011, I crashed my road bike after hitting gravel going downhill. I broke my pelvis in three places, suffered a concussion and had some serious road rash.
The Screw- Two days after the fall I had a 4.1 inch screw inserted from the right side of my hip to the back to hold it together. Fancy hardware.
Will I Ride Again?- Cycling betrayed me. Will I ride again?
A Time for Everything- This has been a process of learning that there really is a time for everything.
Needles- The accident brought some tough days. I lost my job.
The Birthday Walker- Because, sometimes, the best birthday gift is a pimped out walker and dinner downtown.
Holistic Healing- I used holistic approaches to healing- and they worked.
And Now I Remember- I randomly ran into the person who watched my accident happen and helped me until paramedics arrived. Turns out I actually do remember the moment- pain and tears included.
I Will Run.- I set a bold goal to run a marathon January 8, 2012, just four months from my accident date. The surgeon said I’d start walking after three months.
Ode to a Good Husband- Richard won husband of the year day after day since the crash. “#5- Thank you for cleaning up after me when I accidentally peed on the floor a little.”
Choosing to Believe- “Because choosing to believe in the best and then giving it your absolute all is all you can ever do with something you love.”
And then I walked!- Seven weeks post-accident I got clearance to start walking and moving as tolerated. JOY!
If Matt can, I can too.- I use NY firefighter Matt Long as inspiration as I look forward to running my first post-accident marathon January 8, 2012.
